Story and Testimony:
I would like to share a story about a friend and member of our community… After years of struggling against her body and a diagnosis of Hashimoto’s hypothyroid condition, she began experimenting with essential oils.

Some of the worst symptoms she experienced from her condition included sluggishness, constant bloating and over-all puffiness, digestive pain, and mental fogginess. She was on a significant dose of thyroid medication, taking daily up to 175 mcg of Synthroid. Fortunately she had already decided to eliminate processed foods, gluten, refined sugars, and any ingredients made in a laboratory. But even with this healthy lifestyle change to her diet and high dose of thyroid hormone, she still felt awful even though her tests “looked fine.”
Still under her doctors care she was determined to wean off the high dose that didn’t seem to be helping her feel better, so she decided to give essential oils a try.
We were both thrilled and she was astounded by how effectively they brought her back into balance and cleared up the symptoms she had been struggling with for so long.
Every morning, she began applying essential oils to her thyroid (at the front base of the neck) and over her adrenal glands (lower back above her kidneys) as well as the reflexology points on her feet for thyroid and adrenals.
In the evenings, she began applying the oils to the bottoms of her feet, massaging her feet with essential oils and coconut oil on the thyroid and parathyroid points. She has noticed an astounding change in how she is feeling!

I love Frankincense because it is one of the most potent natural sedatives—many of my massage clients have been very successful with applying it to their throat chakra and temples whenever they feel anxious, anger, or stress—the common mental symptoms experienced with hyperthyroid and Graves’ conditions.
For those with hyperthyroid conditions who feel flighty and easily irritated, Spruce oil is amazing!! It has an immediate grounding effect and is a powerful remedy for centering, calming and focusing. Spruce oil is in our favorite Grounding Blend dōTERRA Balance®. Spruce was used by Native Americans for health and spiritual reasons and is still used today to bring harmony to the mind and body.
Lemongrass is one of my favorite scents because it is so invigorating and refreshing. It’s also great for the nerves and nervous system, and I’ve heard that it’s amazing remedy for those who often experience nervousness. Because of this sedative property, it’s also great for soothing and calming the mind, relieving tension, and releasing anxious feelings. Many of my massage clients with hyperthyroidism complain of restlessness and trouble sleeping, Lemongrass, dōTERRA Serenity® blend and Lavender are some of the best essential oils to help promote a peaceful nights rest.
A general rule for using essential oils for your thyroid is that for an under-active thyroid, use oils with stimulating properties. For an over-active thyroid, use oils with a sedating and calming properties.
What I have experienced works best for my clients is purchasing CPTG – Certified Pure Therapeutic-Grade essential oils and placing a few drops in a glass roller-ball bottle with a base oil of Rosehip oil or fractionated coconut oil (Rosehip oil is lovely but doesn’t have as long of a shelf life as FCO, so if you make it as you use it the Rosehip oil is wonderful, just keep all of your oils stored in a cool dark place).

Want to make you own roller-ball to support your thyroid? You will need Geranium, Lemongrass, Peppermint, and Frankincense a 10ml glass roller-ball bottle and either Rosehip, jojoba or fractionated coconut oil. Add to the empty bottle equal amounts of each of the essential oils 3 to 5 drops each and then 1 tbs of carrier oil (use you nose and see what strength feels good for you).
Here is why I suggest this combination of essential oils especially for thyroid support:
- Geranium is known to support adrenals and lifts spirits
- Lemongrass calms your nervous system and supports thyroid health
- Peppermint cools and reduces swelling (common in inflammation)
- Frankincense balances hormones and also addresses associated swelling
Once you have put these into a roller-ball bottle, apply topically to the base of your neck tracing the infinity sign (horizontal figure 8) every morning as part of your self-care practice and throughout the day, especially when you feel like you need an extra boost and confidence.
So you don’t contaminate the roller-ball applicator, with your roller-ball apply to clean finger pads and massage a few drop of essential oils into your foot’s big toe and reflexology point for the thyroid located at the base of the foot in the fleshy area below the big toe.
Did you know? You absorb oils quickly into your bloodstream through the bottom of your feet. If applied all over the bottom of the foot, the oil can be detected in every cell of the body within 20 minutes.
HERE ARE A FEW MORE TIPS:
- To relieve muscle or joint pain, try a soothing bath using Geranium, Frankincense, Peppermint, and Lemongrass oils.
- To fight fatigue, try a combination of Peppermint and citrus oils, such as dōTERRA Citrus Bliss® blend, Lemon, Lime, and Grapefruit, Tangerine, Wild Orange, Green or Red Mandarin, etc.
