D.I.Y. – Tasty Drops for Constipation

Let’s talk a little about the important difference between occasional bouts of constipation and chronic issues.

Constipation can occur for any number of reasons including stress, dehydration, poor diet, or holding it because you are too shy to use public facilities.  However, research suggest that chronic constipation may indicate a more serious issue such as an imbalance of gut flora, allergies, hypothyroidism or inadequate levels of minerals in your system.  (source, source, source)

How often during a  physical exam have we advised our physician of chronic constipation, only to be referred to a daily dose of Miralax instead of working to identify and address the root cause.  And those of you with little ones have heard the same thing as well.  As our Children are often effected with chronic constipation due to developing digestive systems.   This is one of the many reasons we are empowered to support our health first at home and why we seek a new practitioner willing to partner in our health.

So why Not Miralax?

Shockingly not so long ago, according to pediatrician Dr. Scott Cohen, Miralax is often prescribed to children for months and sometimes years.  “We literally give it like water,” he told the New York Times.

  1. Miralax is not even approved for children.
  2. Recommended for a maximum of seven days in adults.

Getting Things Moving with these Tasty Drops

There are natural and dietary way to encourage normal bowel function.  The use of Coconut Oil has become more and more popular in our current society and for good reason.  I have read that the medium chain triglycerides that make up coconut oil don’t cause a person to store the fat, and they have limited absorption in the small intestine so it tends to pass right through.  That is why this is a key ingredient in this recipe.

Just two-four servings of these taste drops and between 8-10 hours later, relief.  Keep the children at two drops and Adults can take four and possible more for the desired results.

Constipation Tasty Drops

INGREDIENTS

1 CUP – organic extra virgin coconut oil, melted

1/4 – 1/3 CUP – lemon juice (mix and taste as you go along)*

8-10 drops – doTERRA Lemon Essential Oil

2 Tbls – local honey, maple syrup, agave or coconut sugar

1/4 Tsp – pink Himalayan salt

  • Note:  You can also reduce the lemon juice and add pureed fruit.  Just be sure if the fruit is frozen that it is completely thawed and pureed before mixing it with the coconut oil.  You could also use a sugar free jam for added flavor and color.  Our second batch picture was a 1/4 cup of frozen blue berries and raspberries that were thawed and pureed prior to mixing with other ingredients.

EQUIPMENT

1-2 Silicon molds ( I use silicone small ice-cube trays)

Food Processor or Immersion blender

INSTRUCTIONS  (Very Simple)

To prevent separation prior to freezing, place the molds in the freezer while you are blending the ingredients.  (note: the white drops in the picture are the first batch I made with just the lemon juice and although my molds were chilled there was some separation of the drops and they weren’t completely solid in form)

Combine ingredients in a processor or handheld mixer and pour into the molds.

Everything has to be very well blended into the oil, so make sure as you are pouring that bit isn’t sugar or honey-heavy.

Place molds into the freezer for an hour.  Then you can store them in a mason jar in the fridge and enjoy as needed.

Oral Health – D.I.Y. healthy chewing

Essential Oil Gum Recipe

What You Need

  • Six ounces of natural beeswax
  • 1 drop of clove essential oil
  • 2 drops of cinnamon essential oil

What You Do

  • Use or make a double broiler.
  • Melt your beeswax.
  • Add the essential oil drops.
  • Pour the mixture into a silicon mold or ice tray and freeze for 2-3 hours or until hardened.
  • Chew!

Important Note: Please do not use cheap essential oils for this recipe. You will be ingesting these oils as you chew the gum so I highly recommend you avoid brands that may have synthetic additives (which are not always listed on the bottle).

Our personal recommendation are DoTerra essential oils have been tested for purity and are labeled appropriately for internal use. But many cheaper oils aren’t safe to use internally due to how they were produced so be aware.

You can add a healthy sweetener such as xylitol or stevia if you like. I think the cinnamon oil added enough flavor but ultimately it’s up to you and your preference.

There are also other oils options to include as an alternative like Slim and Sassy Blend, Lemon, Grapefruit, Peppermint or Spearmint, and you can even consider OnGuard Blend.

Why use Clove Oil?

For many years, clove oil has been used in dentistry as a numbing agent. It’s powerful and safe as long as it is diluted (which the beeswax does in this recipe). Clove oil is the perfect solution when experiencing a bout of sensitive teeth after eating something cold or drinking a hot beverage and goes well with cinnamon.

And it has also been reported that clove oil decreases decalcification of teeth and actually stimulates remineralization. Now that is awesome!

Why Cinnamon Essential Oil?

Because it tastes good! It has also been linked to improved immune function because it is naturally purifying and germ-destroying. Cinnamon also lifts mood and helps to relieve sadness or self-doubt. And some even believe it to be a natural aphrodisiac – WHAT?!

In Closing

Chewing gum has its benefits. So as long as you don’t chew like a cow. hewing can be a healthy activity for your oral heal and your cravings.

And with a couple of minutes, three ingredients and the amazing power of essential oils, you can make your own chewing gum that tastes good, improves the condition of your teeth and improves your mood. Sounds like a win!

Lemon Oil or Lemon Juice?

Lemon essential oil is cold-pressed from the rind while lemon juice comes from the pulp, resulting in two very dissimilar substances with unrelated properties. Chemically, Lemon essential oil is very high in limonene, much more so than lemon juice. In particular, the high concentration of limonene is why Lemon essential oils is so cleansing and can aid in digestive and respiratory function when consumed.

Essential oils are also highly concentrated; even if  the substances were identical in makeup, it would take a large amount of fresh lemon juice to match the potency of two drops of Lemon essential oil in water. Finally, Lemon essential oil may also be easier to ingest for those with sensitive stomachs because it does not contain citric acid, the component of lemon juice that makes it sour. Perfectly said by Dr. David K. Hill, DC.

Benefits of Lemon essential oil:

  • Cleanses and purifies the air and surfaces.
  • Naturally cleanses the body and aids in digestion.
  • Supports healthy respiratory function.
  • It may help with seasonal respiratory discomfort.*
  • Diffuse to promote a positive mood.
  • Take internally to assist with seasonal respiratory discomfort (add Peppermint and Lavender along with Lemon in a gel capsule, 1 drop each).
  • Add Lemon oil to a glass spray bottle of water to clean tables, counter tops, and other surfaces.
  • Lemon oil makes a great furniture polish; simply add a few drops to olive oil to clean, protect, and shine wood finishes. (add a few drops of Arborvitae).
  • Use a cloth soaked in Lemon oil to preserve and protect your leather furniture and other leather surfaces or garments.
  • Lemon oil is a great remedy for the early stages of tarnish on silver and other metals.
  • Put on a rag to help remove stubborn, sticky residue on surfaces.
  • Wash hands in Lemon oil to remove grease from your hands after changing your oil.
  • Add Lemon to enhance the flavor of desserts and main dishes.
  • It promotes healthy functioning of the GI tract.*
  • Use Lemon essential oil in an oral rinse to soothe the mouth and throat.

This is one of our favorite oils and I have several bottles around the house.

We hope you enjoy the lemon oil from doTERRA as much as we do, is just so amazing.
