Internal use of Pure Essential oils

It has long been debated even to this day of the safety issues regarding the internal use of essential oils. After 15 years of personally using essential oils for my own health and wellness, extensive research and training, and aromatherapy certification, I am confident in sharing with you that pure essential oils, are safe to use internally with the proper dosage and direction. Like anything you would consider taking over the counter, you would not leave it unattended for children to get to and you would not use too much of it.

Remember essential oils are 70 times more concentrated than their herbal equivalents and you need to remember that when it comes to the body’s balance and response… less is more. This is one of the many reasons that we have identified essential oils as being more affordable. Because you can experience the effect with just a couple of drops.

As a Special Note: I am only making my recommendations for doTERRA Essential oils as I know and trust them to be the most Pure and Effective essential oils (consistently) available in our market. This among other reasons is why I have chosen to represent doTERRA and help others learn about these amazing oils. But please know I don’t care whether you set up your own account with our HHS Tribe or from someone else, we are just happy you are here learning more about these essential oils for your Health, Happiness, and Home.

the FDA has clearly delineated which oils are safe and which are not. For the exhaustive FDA-approved list of Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) oils that you can check out here.2

Among the single oils doTERRA offers currently, 37 are safe for internal use. Using the oils for internal purposes means that you go beyond putting them on your skin to ingest them for their specific benefits to various organs or cells. There are several ways to take oils internally; you can cook with the oils, take them in beverages, or put them in a veggie capsule to swallow.

Using oils internally is a method that is best used only when you have specific area of concern that can only be met by ingesting the essential oil. Keep in mind that you only need a drop or two at a time to reap the benefits of the oil. For example, supporting healthy digestion is a benefit that comes from taking Ginger internally.

Below we have outlined some of the main reasons why you would use an essential oil internally, and which oils are specifically meant for that purpose.

  1. To support the immune system and its function.* The immune system is our number one defense against outside threats. Many oils are good for maintaining your immune system when taken internally. These oils include Cassia, Cilantro (which also supports the response of the immune system), Cinnamon Bark, Clove, Copaiba, Frankincense, Helichrysum, Lime, Marjoram, Melissa, Myrrh, Oregano, Roman Chamomile, Tangerine, Thyme, Vetiver, and Wild Orange.

  2. For supporting the health of the respiratory system.* Some of the oils in this category may surprise you a little, but their internal benefits clearly include helping the respiratory system for a variety of reasons. On the list are Black Pepper, Cardamom, Copaiba, Fennel, Lemon, Lime, Myrrh, Oregano, Peppermint, Rosemary, and Thyme. Of these, both Peppermint and Cardamom help with clear breathing.* Black Pepper and Lemon help the respiratory system particularly when seasonal threats are high.*

  3. To obtain antioxidants to protect against free radical damage.* Free radicals are harmful molecules created as your body breaks down food or by being exposed to tobacco smoke and radiation. Once in your body, free radicals can wreak havoc on your cells. The antioxidants found in the following oils may help to protect your cells:* Black Pepper, Copaiba, Juniper Berry, Lime, Oregano, Petitgrain, Wild Orange, Ylang Ylang.

  4. To aid in the normal digestive process.* Our digestive systems serve us by taking in nutrients, eliminating waste, and absorbing and using the nutrients we eat. The digestive system is constantly at work for us, and the following oils help keep it functioning normally: Black Pepper, Cardamom, Cassia, Cilantro, Copaiba, Coriander, Frankincense, Ginger, Lemon, Lemongrass, and Tangerine.

  5. May help ease indigestion or an occasional upset stomach.* Everyone faces digestive issues at times. But, with essential oils, you have the power to combat indigestion or even an upset stomach. Oils like Cardamom help with indigestion, while Ginger (also helps with gas and bloating), and Spearmint can aid in case of nausea or upset stomach.* Interestingly, Myrrh when taken with honey and water can also help ease the stomach.*

  6. Supports the cardiovascular system.* It is very beneficial to your health to take good care of your cardiovascular system. As you may remember from school, the cardiovascular system is responsible for transporting oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and cellular waste throughout your body. The engine of it all is the heart, the body’s hardest working organ. Even when you’re resting it pumps over five liters of blood through your body every minute. Oils that can help include Bergamot, Cinnamon Bark, Clove, Marjoram, Thyme, Lime, and Helichrysum. More specifically, Black Pepper, Cinnamon Bark, Clove, Fennel, and Thyme all help assist in healthy circulation as well.

  7. To provide cleansing to internal bodily systems.* Sometimes the body just needs to cleanse and renew. Oils to include in your next cleansing smoothie or tea include Cilantro, Helichrysum, Juniper Berry, Lemon, Thyme (specifically for the gastrointestinal and digestive systems), and Wild Orange.

  8. Calms or supports the nervous system.* From your brain to your nerves, the nervous system is complex, but taking care of it doesn’t need to be. In addition to getting good sleep, providing vital nutrients, and getting exercise, essential oils can help support the nervous system. These supporting oils are Bergamot, Copaiba, Helichrysum, and Marjoram. Oils that are calming to the nervous system are Cilantro, Clary Sage, Copaiba, Lavender, and Petitgrain.*

Although these are some of the main reasons to take oils internally, there are many more reasons. What follows here is a list of any unique uses essential oils possess when used internally. In cases where there are recipes, we have also linked you to them to give you more options in consuming each oil.

Tips for Safely Ingesting Essential Oils

It is important to realize that people consume essential oils all day without even realizing it. Where do you think your processed foods get their flavor from! Virtually anything that is naturally flavored most likely contains essential oils.

E-Book on Internal Use of Essential Oils

If you follow these practical tips for safe internal oil use, you should be fine:

  • Most people can tolerate gentle oils like frankincense, lemon, and orange essential oil taken directly under the tongue for quick access into the bloodstream, but this is not a long-term strategy. Limit use to a few days at a time and always discontinue use if irritation or reflux occurs.
  • Hotter oils like oregano, thyme, and clove oil should ALWAYS be diluted with a carrier oil. One (1) drop (or less) per teaspoon of coconut oil and a little bit of raw honey is not only usually safe for most people, but super tasty!
  • Putting 1-2 drops in a capsule will help you avoid esophageal irritation and any more should only be for the therapeutic use of an acute issue and only under the guidance of a trained Aromatherapist and your Health Practitioner. Again, this is not supposed to be a daily habit. This strategy can be enjoyed up to twice a day if you’re trying to fight a specific health condition, but no more than 3-4 weeks at a time. Long term use of anything is never advised as it can potentially cause liver damage and your body may develop resistance.

Raw Rainbow Salad with Fresh Tomato-Basil Dressing

Basil is a culinary must-have that has been used to enhance the taste of food of cultures across the world. This herb is part of the mint family and is great for adding a fresh, herbal flavor to meats, pastas, and entrées.

Though Basil oil is known for its culinary benefits; it also has a variety of uses for both the mind and the body. The basil plant and Basil oil is rich with linalool, a naturally occurring chemical, which is beneficial in decreasing feelings of tension when applied to the temples and reducing anxious feelings when diffused. See the link below for to learn more about the benefits of Basil Essential Oil.

Ingredients:

2 plum tomatoes

2 large cloves garlic, minced

2 tbs. champagne vinegar

½ cup extra-virgin olive oil

1-3 drops Basil essential oil

Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

Pinch of sugar (optional, to cut acidity of tomatoes)

4 zucchini

4 summer squash

8 radishes, very thinly sliced

4 shallots, very thinly sliced

2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved

1½ cups shaved parmesan

1 cup sunflower seeds

Directions:

Using a mini food processor, puree the tomato; you should have about 1/2 cup. In a small bowl, whisk together tomato puree, minced garlic, champagne vinegar, olive oil, and Basil essential oil. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Add sugar to taste if desired.

Trim ends from zucchini and summer squashes. Using a spiralizer fitted with the small shredder blade, cut the zucchini and squash into spaghetti-like spiral strands, using kitchen shears to cut the curls every 3 or 4 rotations.

Transfer zucchini and squashes to a large bowl. Add radishes, shallots and cherry tomatoes. Add the vinaigrette to taste and toss to evenly distribute. Top with parmesan shavings and sunflower seeds and serve immediately.

Serves 8.

During this time of Health Crisis in 2020…

How are you doing?

I wanted to share this perspective with you and let you know we are praying for everyone to be Healthy, Happy, and Strong.

WE ARE NOT IN THE SAME BOAT …
I heard that we are all in the same boat, but it’s not like that. We are in the same storm, but not in the same boat. Your ship could be shipwrecked and mine might not be. Or vice versa.

For some, quarantine is optimal. A moment of reflection, of re-connection, easy in flip flops, with a cocktail or coffee. For others, this is a desperate financial & family crisis.

For some that live alone they’re facing endless loneliness. While for others it is peace, rest & time with their mother, father, sons & daughters.

With the $600 weekly increase in unemployment some are bringing in more money to their households than they were working. Others are working more hours for less money due to pay cuts or loss in sales.

Some families of 4 just received $3400 from the stimulus while other families of 4 saw $0.

Some were concerned about getting a certain candy for Easter while others were concerned if there would be enough bread, milk and eggs for the weekend.

Some want to go back to work because they don’t qualify for unemployment and are running out of money. Others want to kill those who break the quarantine.

Some are home spending 2-3 hours/day helping their child with online schooling while others are spending 2-3 hours/day to educate their children on top of a 10-12 hour workday.

Some have experienced the near death of the virus, some have already lost someone from it and some are not sure if their loved ones are going to make it. Others don’t believe this is a big deal.

Some have faith in God and expect miracles during this 2020. Others say the worst is yet to come.

So, friends, we are not in the same boat. We are going through a time when our perceptions and needs are completely different.

Each of us will emerge, in our own way, from this storm. It is very important to see beyond what is seen at first glance. Not just looking, actually seeing.

We are all on different ships during this storm experiencing a very different journey.

Realize that and be kind.”

Lime Essential Oil

Lime – Citrus aurantifolia

Known for its distinct aroma and taste, Lime provides cleansing benefits when taken internally or used topically—making it the perfect oil for purifying skin and surfaces.*

Historical Uses
For some time, lime was used as a remedy for dyspepsia with glycerin of pepsin. It was often used in place of lemon for fevers, infections, sore throats, colds, etc.

Other Possible Uses
This oil may be beneficial for anxiety, blood pressure, soothing broken capillaries, dissolving cellulite, improving clarity of thought, debility, energy, gallstones, hair (cleansing), promoting leukocyte formation, liver deficiencies in children, lymphatic system cleansing, memory improvement, nails (strengthening), nervous conditions, cleaning children’s skin, sore throats, water and air purification, and promoting a sense of well-being. It works extremely well in removing gum, wood stain, oil, and grease spots. It may also help brighten a pale, dull complexion by removing the dead skin cells. Lime oil is capable of tightening skin and connective tissue.

Lime Oil Uses and Benefits

  1. Known for its purifying properties, Lime essential oil is often used as an internal cleanser.* Lime oil may also support healthy immune function.* When you want to reap these internal benefits, consider adding a drop or two of Lime oil to your water glass or water bottle to enhance the flavor and provide antioxidant support.* If you want a flavorful drink that isn’t soda or full of sugar, you can also place a drop of Lemon and a drop of Lime oil in your water for a refreshing, sweet flavor. But only a drop or two!! A little goes a long way!!!
  2. Looking to add flavor to a side dish? You can always add a drop of Lime essential oil to give it an extra punch of flavor. Lime oil is also a delicious addition to starchy foods like corn or potatoes, a drop to your beer or cocktail or salsa or side dish…
  3. Not only does Lime essential oil taste sweet, it also has a tart, citrus scent as well. This aroma is perfect for when you want to brighten a room or make your home/home away from home clean or fresh. To utilize the smell of Lime oil around your house, try our Spring Fling Room Spray DIY. Simply combine Lemon, Grapefruit, and Lime oil with distilled water into a glass spray bottle and spray the concoction around your home or any area that could use a more cheerful scent.
  4. If you are a fan of fruity or sweet drinks, Lime oil is your new best friend. Lime essential oil will add a tart, naturally sweet flavor to your favorite slushies, smoothies, or drinks includingcocktails.
  5. While the cleansing properties of Lime essential oil can be helpful for internal cleansing* or cleaning the house, you can also use Lime oil to help purify the skin and hair. Consider adding one or two drops of Lime essential oil to your face wash or shampoo to yield the benefits of added cleansing properties. To use Lime oil for hair, just combine with a few drops of Melaleuca and give yourself a scalp massage in the shower. When you want to use Lime essential oil for skin, try our Ginger Lime Brown Sugar Scrub. You can easily make this facial scrub at home, and it will leave your skin softer and more exfoliated.
  6. Because it has such a unique and stimulating scent, there are many benefits that come from diffusing Lime essential oil. The refreshing properties of Lime oil can positively affect mood when diffused. Lime oil can also promote well-being and emotional balance, so it is a good idea to diffuse Lime on days when you need to center and balance your emotions, or if you aren’t feeling your best. While diffusing Lime oil can help lift your mood, you can also diffuse this oil when you simply want to cleanse the air in your kitchen, bedroom, office, or entire home.
  7. Like Lemon oil, doTERRA Lime essential oil comes in handy for cleaning. There are countless ways to use Lime oil for cleaning, whether you want to get rid of a sticky mess, clean your countertops, or purify your hands. Citrus oils are also wonderful at cleaning leather! When you are left with a sticky, goopy, or greasy mess, you can use Lime essential oil to remove grease spots or residue left behind. Simply place a few drops of Lime oil on the spot or a cotton cloth and rub down the area until the residue or spot is gone. Toxic chemical in your dryer sheets are worse than some cleaning products

The average American household is loaded with toxic chemicals.  These chemicals are often found in household cleaning and cosmetic products.  But, of all the toxic products in the average household…the chemicals found in fabric softeners and dryer sheets are among the most potentially harmful.

The chemicals used to make these products are extremely dangerous to our neurological system.  Our nervous system (including the brain) operate via chemical messengers (neuro-transmitters).  These chemical messengers are damaged and disrupted by the ingredients in these products.  Given the nature of these products, they are extremely dangerous due to the fact these toxic ingredients are transferred to our clothing, bed sheets, towels, etc.  Basically, we are in contact with these toxic ingredients constantly.  Also, when heated these toxic substances are often released into the air and are inhaled.

The following are substances used as ingredients in dryer sheets and fabric softeners that are most concerning (they are often used in untested combinations):

Alpha Terpineol, Pentane and Linalool:  This is one of the potentially airborne substances that is very dangerous when inhaled.  It has been linked to nervous system damage and respiratory issues.

Benzyl acetate: Has been identified as a potential cause of pancreas cancer

Benzyl alcohol:  Can irritate the upper respiratory system.  Has been linked to central nervous system disorders, vomiting, nausea, headaches, syncope and dizziness.

Chloroform:  This is a well-known carcinogen that is also neurotoxic.  It would be released into the air when heated and can cause loss of consciousness, headaches, nausea, vomiting and dizziness.

Ethanol:  This ingredient is on the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list.  Has been linked to CNS disorders.

Ethyl Acetate:  Also on the EPA’s Hazardous Waste List.  Can cause headaches.

Fragrances:  These fragrances are composed of several of hundreds of synthetic chemicals that are almost always toxic,

The best way to reduce your exposure to these toxic ingredients is to avoid commercial fabric softeners all together.

Or you can make your own dryer sheets using essential oils from doTERRA:

How to make your own dryer sheets using essential oils

  1. Fill a clean container with white vinegar and add a few drops of your favorite essential oil (I use lavender)
  2. Cut an old sheet or t-shirt in squares then add them into the container with the vinegar. Shake well so the fabric squares are completely saturated.
  3. When using, simply grab a square and place it in the dryer with your laundry.
  4. When done, return the squares to the container of vinegar. Add more vinegar and essential oils as needed to keep the squares saturated and fresh.
